“Cranes,” with its two titular, welcoming white birds perched near a tree silhouetted by a setting sun, is inspired by a lovely 1883 Japanese hanging scroll created by Kishinami Ryukei (1855-1935) to honor the crane, a traditional Asian symbol of good fortune and longevity.
